Brice Loose

Associate Professor, Oceanography in the Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry and Physical Oceanography of the Graduate School of Oceanography

Loose studies the processes at the boundary between biogeochemistry and physical oceanography, with a strong focus on the polar oceans. His lab’s primary goal is to figure out how sea ice affects the polar ocean carbon cycle and how changes in sea ice will alter ocean carbon sequestration. Ocean instrumentation is needed in these extreme conditions and constraints. Loose is interested in advancing ocean instrumentation for research and is currently using underwater mass spectrometry and geochemical tracers for tracing ice melt and heat transport. As the chief research officer on NSF’s Northwest Passage Project, Loose enjoys collaborating with and training many rising scientists.
