Menezes’s expertise spans oceanography, estuarine ecology, environmental and energy policy, inclusive science communication and engagement, and promoting societal participation in science through interdisciplinary graduate education and professional development for journalists and scientists. She had the opportunity to develop national and state-level environmental policy as a Dean John Knauss National Sea Grant Marine Policy Fellow with Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. and later as part of a multidisciplinary team at the URI Coastal Resources Center and Rhode Island Sea Grant. As Executive Director of the Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting at URI, Dr. Menezes and her team develop and implement science training programs for professional journalists to promote clear and accurate reporting of environmental news and supporting scientists in conveying their research to the public. Through the Institute, the team founded the Inclusive SciComm Symposium, a national conference designed to build a community of practice and scholarship that centers inclusion and equity in science communication.
